Installing and joining the 3.0mm edging
The Heavy-Duty system installs differently from Chippy’s original 1.6mm Flat Edge. Each length finishes square and meets the next end to end. A joining plate behind the edging supports the butt joint and keeps the front face uninterrupted.
- Set out the required landscape line and prepare a narrow trench where needed.
- Position the first length at the required height and check the alignment.
- Mark the centre of the joining plate and place half behind the end of the first length.
- Clamp the plate and edging, then use the supplied template to mark the fixing holes.
- Drill the marked holes and fasten the first length to the plate.
- Place the second length against the first and align the top edges.
- Clamp, mark, drill and fasten the second length to the other half of the plate.
- Recheck the line before fixing the edging to the remaining pegs and backfilling.
Keep support pegs clear of the joining plates so they do not interfere with clamping, drilling or fixing.
Corners and cutting
The matching 90-degree corner can be turned to create either an internal or external corner. Connect it with the same rear joining plate, marking template and butt-joint method.
The edging can be cut on site with an appropriate metal-cutting method. Smooth and lightly bevel the cut edge afterwards to remove sharp corners. The 3.0mm profile requires more effort to cut and handle than the 1.6mm Flat Edge system.
What is needed to join two straight lengths?
Allow one matching joining plate for each connection between two straight lengths. Centre the plate behind the butt join, mark the holes with the supplied template and fix both edging lengths to the plate. Joining plates and compatible fixings are selected separately because the required quantity depends on the project layout.
Why does the 3.0mm system use butt joins?
A butt join allows two 3.0mm lengths to meet without doubling the visible steel thickness at the connection. The rear plate supports the joint and helps align the faces while the hardware remains out of sight from the main viewing side.
Does the edging arrive with pre-drilled holes?
No. Hole positions are marked on site with the supplied screw-hole marking template after the adjoining lengths or corner have been aligned and clamped. This gives the installer a consistent fixing pattern without dictating the final joint position before installation.
Which joining plates does it use?
The system uses the 1.6mm joining plates from Chippy’s Safe Edge range. Match the plate to the edging height. The 280mm plate is used with the 300mm edging and sits slightly short of the full height without changing the normal joining method.
Which pegs should I use?
Use Chippy’s 25 × 395mm Corten pegs for the 100mm and 150mm edging. Use the 25 × 500mm pegs for the 300mm edging. Four to five pegs per 3.0m length is a practical starting allowance, adjusted for soil conditions, finished height and the shape of the installation.
Do not position a peg directly behind a butt join. Keep it clear of the joining plate so the components can be clamped, drilled and fixed without interfering with one another.
Can the same corner turn in either direction?
Yes. The matching 90-degree corner can be oriented for an internal or external turn. Corners are available in 100mm, 150mm and 300mm heights and connect with rear joining plates.
Can Heavy-Duty 3.0mm edging form curves?
Yes. Heavy Duty 3.0mm edging can form softer curves, although it is more rigid and requires a broader curve than the 1.6mm Flat Edge system. Choose the 1.6mm Flat Edge where the design relies on tighter or more flowing curves.
Can the edging be cut on site?
Yes. Cut the steel with an appropriate metal-cutting method, then smooth and lightly bevel the cut edge to remove sharp corners. The 3.0mm profile requires more effort to cut than the 1.6mm system.
Is it suitable for retaining soil?
It can separate garden materials and form non-structural raised landscape features, but it is not a structural retaining wall. Use a properly designed retaining system where the project involves substantial soil pressure, major level changes or structural loads.
Is Corten maintenance-free?
It does not require painting to create its characteristic finish. The patina will continue changing, and runoff, surrounding drainage and the build-up of garden material should still be monitored as part of normal landscape care.
