Chippy’s Outdoor has supplied Corten steel garden edging for more than 10 years. Our original Flat Edge, purpose-designed Safe Edge and Heavy Duty 3mm systems are manufactured in Melbourne for garden beds, paths, lawn separation, straight lines, corners and curves.

Corten is the commonly used name for weathering steel. It is supplied raw grey and gradually develops the familiar orange-brown patina through repeated exposure to moisture and drying.

Which Corten garden edging is right for your project?


Chippy’s Flat Edge, Safe Edge, Heavy Duty and garden rings are made from weathering steel, but each range has been designed for a different application, installation method and finished appearance.

Flat Edge Corten Steel Garden Edging

Flat Edge is the original Chippy’s Corten edging system. It is economical, flexible and well suited to everyday garden borders, paths, lawn separation, straight runs, angles and natural curves.

Safe Edge Corten Steel Garden Edging

Safe Edge was designed by Chippy’s Outdoor for customers wanting a softer, more pronounced finished top. Its continuous fold creates an approximately 10 mm-wide visible top edge and adds rigidity to help maintain straighter lines, while the 1.6 mm steel can still be shaped gradually into curves.

Joining plates, corners and pegs fit from behind the edging. The fixings sit in the lower third, where they can generally be concealed below the finished soil level or within normal grass growth.

3mm Flat Edge Corten Steel - Heavy Duty

Heavy Duty is Chippy’s most substantial Corten edging system. Made from solid 3.0mm weathering steel, it provides greater rigidity than our 1.6mm ranges while still allowing softer curves to be formed. It is designed for strong, well-defined garden borders, straight runs,
corners and more demanding landscape installations.

Lengths meet with a neat butt join rather than overlapping. A joining plate fits behind the edging, with fixing holes marked onsite using the supplied screw-hole marking template. Compatible pegs
and purpose-made corners complete the system.

Corten Steel Garden Rings

Chippy’s Corten garden rings create a ready-formed circular border for trees, planting, gravel-filled steppers and raised garden features. Each ring is made in Melbourne from a 3 metre Flat Edge length, producing a finished diameter of approximately 950 mm after the ends overlap.

  • Available in 100, 150, 300 and 600 mm heights

What height Corten garden edging should you use?

100 mm edging

The 100 mm height is a good garden separator where a pronounced raised edge is not required. It works well between lawn and garden beds, gravel and mulch, or paths and surrounding soil.

150 mm edging

The 150 mm height gives the border more presence. It suits more visible landscape lines, raised garden beds and areas with a modest change in garden level.

280 or 300 mm edging

Use 280 mm Safe Edge or 300 mm Flat Edge where a deeper border, more definitive feature or additional visible height is required. These sizes can be useful in deeper beds and across sloping gardens.

When garden edging is not enough

Corten edging can define garden areas and manage modest level changes, but it is not a structural retaining wall. Where the project needs to retain substantial soil, manage pressure from a slope or support a structural load, use a properly designed retaining structure. Traditional sleepers can provide the structure and can be clad with a suitable Chippy’s screening product where the appearance needs to be softened.

What is Corten or weathering steel garden edging?

Corten is the name commonly used for weathering steel. Rather than being supplied with a painted or powder-coated finish, the exposed steel develops a natural rust-coloured patina through repeated wetting and drying.

The words Corten edging, weathering steel garden edging, rusted steel edging, metal garden edging and steel landscape edging are often used when customers are looking for this type of garden border. At Chippy’s, Corten refers to the weathering steel used across our Flat Edge, Safe Edge and garden-ring range.

Every straight length is supplied as raw grey steel, not with a finished orange-brown colour. The surface colour develops outdoors and will continue changing as the steel weathers. No two projects will finish in exactly the same way.

How long does the patina take to develop?

Timing depends on the weather, season, orientation and frequency of wetting and drying. Orange-brown colour may begin appearing within weeks, while a more developed finish can take a couple of months.

Vertical installations can take longer because water drains away quickly. Customers wanting to encourage the initial weathering before installation can lay the lengths flat in a suitable outdoor area, wet them with a hose, brush the surface with a broom and allow them to dry between wetting cycles.

This encourages the natural weathering process but does not create a guaranteed colour or timeline.

Important information about rust runoff

Weathering steel can release rust-coloured runoff while the patina develops. This runoff may stain concrete, paving, stone and other porous surfaces.

Consider where water will drain before choosing the installation position. If rust-coloured staining would be unacceptable and runoff cannot be directed away from the adjacent surface, Corten may not be the right product for that location.

Yes. All three Chippy’s Corten edging systems can be installed as a DIY project. Flat Edge and Safe Edge are the easier options because their joining holes are pre-drilled. Heavy Duty 3mm edging requires more careful alignment at each butt join, with fixing holes marked and drilled onsite using the supplied screw-hole marking template. Follow the installation instructions for the system you choose.

As a starting guide, allow four to five pegs for each 3 metre straight edging length. The final number depends on edging height, soil conditions, curves and the amount of edging left visible above ground.

It can define raised beds and manage modest changes in garden level, but it is not a structural retaining wall. Use an appropriately designed retaining structure where substantial soil pressure or structural loading is involved.
