Safe Edge Corten Steel Garden Edging

Safe Edge was designed by Chippy’s Outdoor for customers wanting a softer, more pronounced finished top. Its continuous fold creates an approximately 10 mm-wide visible top edge and adds rigidity to help maintain straighter lines, while the 1.6 mm steel can still be shaped gradually into curves.

Joining plates, corners and pegs fit from behind the edging. The fixings sit in the lower third, where they can generally be concealed below the finished soil level or within normal grass growth.

  • 3 metre lengths
  • 1.6 mm weathering steel
  • Available in 100, 150 and 280 mm heights
  • Continuous folded top through straight lengths and purpose-made corners
  • Pre-drilled joining holes in the edging and corners
  • Rear-mounted joining plates and pegs keep the smooth finished face cleaner
  • Suitable for DIY and professional installation

Best for: Customers who want the visible top of the edging to form a more noticeable and softer finished detail.

FAQs

Corten is the commonly used name for weathering steel. On this website, Corten edging and weathering steel garden edging refer to the same product material, not two different edging ranges.

No. Flat Edge and Safe Edge straight lengths are supplied as raw grey weathering steel. Their orange-brown patina develops outdoors through repeated moisture and drying.

Initial colour may appear within weeks, but a more developed patina can take a couple of months. Weather, season, orientation and wetting-and-drying conditions all affect the timing.

It can. Rust-coloured runoff may stain concrete, paving, stone and other porous surfaces, particularly while the initial patina develops. Consider drainage and surrounding finishes before installation.

Flat Edge is Chippy’s original, economical and flexible Corten edging system. Safe Edge has a continuous folded top that creates an approximately 10 mm-wide visible finish, adds rigidity and allows joining plates and pegs to sit behind the smooth finished face.

Yes. Both 1.6 mm Flat Edge and Safe Edge can be shaped gradually into natural garden curves. Curves also add rigidity to the installed edging.

Yes. Both systems were designed for DIY and professional use. The correct installation method and components depend on whether you choose Flat Edge or Safe Edge, so follow the instructions on the relevant product page.

As a starting guide, allow four to five pegs for each 3 metre straight edging length. The final number depends on edging height, soil conditions, curves and the amount of edging left visible above ground.

It can define raised beds and manage modest changes in garden level, but it is not a structural retaining wall. Use an appropriately designed retaining structure where substantial soil pressure or structural loading is involved.

No. Weathering steel is intended to develop its natural outdoor patina without paint. The changing colour and potential for rust-coloured runoff should be considered when selecting the installation location.

Yes. Send us your measurements, plan or sketch and the Chippy’s team can help calculate the straight lengths, corners, joining plates, pegs and fixings required.
