Create a neat 90-degree turn in Chippy’s Heavy-Duty 3.0mm Corten Garden Edging. The same corner can be positioned for an internal or external turn, reducing the number of components needed for the system. Available in 100mm, 150mm and 300mm heights to match the straight edging.

  • Solid 3.0mm Corten weathering steel
  • One corner for internal or external 90-degree turns
  • Available in 100mm, 150mm and 300mm heights
  • Butt joins to Heavy-Duty 3.0mm straight edging
  • Connects with joining plates behind the visible face
  • Hole positions marked on site using the Heavy-Duty template
  • Supplied raw grey to weather naturally
  • Designed and made in Melbourne

Chippy’s Heavy-Duty 3.0mm Corten Corner creates a square change of direction without cutting and joining two straight lengths on site. It is made from the same 3.0mm weathering steel as the matching edging, so the thickness, flat top and natural finish continue through the corner.

One corner can be positioned for either an internal or external 90-degree turn. This keeps the system simpler and means the required direction is determined during installation rather than when the component is ordered.

The corner meets the straight edging with a butt join. A joining plate sits behind each connection to help align the two pieces while keeping the hardware away from the main visible face.

The corner is designed for Chippy’s Heavy-Duty 3.0mm Corten Edging system. It is not a replacement corner for the Original 1.6mm Flat Edge or Safe Edge systems, which use different profiles and joining details.

The 280mm joining plate sits slightly short of the full height of the 300mm corner and edging. It is positioned behind the connection to support and align the butt join.

Joining plates and fixings are selected separately. A corner normally creates two connections—one on each side—so allow a joining plate for each connection to a straight edging length.

Use the corner wherever the edging needs to make a defined 90-degree turn, including square garden beds, path intersections, raised landscape features and changes around paving or structures.

For an external corner, position the component so the edging turns around the outside of the garden or landscape area. For an internal corner, turn it so the edging runs into a recess. The same physical component performs either job.

Straight edging meets each end of the corner rather than overlapping it. The joining plates are centred behind the two connections, keeping the front line clean and helping the top edges remain aligned.
The corner creates a fixed right angle. Where the design requires a gradual bend or a direction other than 90 degrees, use a suitable formed section or another layout rather than forcing the corner out of shape.

Like the straight edging, the corner defines garden materials and non-structural landscape features. It is not a structural retaining component and must not be relied on to support substantial soil pressure or structural loads.

  1. Set out the two edging lines and confirm where they need to meet at 90 degrees.
  2. Position the corner at the required height and check both directions before drilling any holes.
  3. Mark the centre of the first joining plate and place half behind one end of the corner.
  4. Clamp the plate and corner securely, then use the Heavy-Duty template to mark the fixing holes.
  5. Drill the marked holes and fasten the joining plate to the corner.
  6. Bring the straight edging against the corner to form a square butt join.
  7. Align the top edges, clamp the connection, mark the remaining holes and complete the fixing.
  8. Repeat the process on the other side of the corner when a straight length connects in both directions.
  9. Recheck the angle, height and alignment before fixing the adjoining edging to its support pegs and backfilling.

Do not position a support peg directly behind either joining plate. Keep the closest pegs clear of the connections so they do not interfere with clamping, drilling or fixing.

Mark and secure one connection at a time. This makes it easier to hold the corner square and prevents movement while the second straight length is aligned.

The fixing-hole template is used to mark the un-drilled corner and edging after the pieces have been positioned. Remove the marking template before drilling.

Corten is a weathering steel that develops its rust-coloured patina through repeated exposure to moisture and drying. The corner is supplied raw grey and will change through orange and brown tones after installation.

The corner and adjoining lengths may not weather at exactly the same rate. Exposure, water flow, handling and the orientation of each surface can affect the early colour. These differences are normal and continue changing as the patina develops.

Rust-coloured runoff can stain concrete, paving, natural stone and other porous materials, particularly during the early weathering period. Consider the direction of drainage and nearby finishes before installation.

The cut edges and points of the component can be sharp. Handle it carefully and keep exposed edges away from pedestrian contact while positioning and installing the system.

Heavy-Duty corners are made specifically for the 3.0mm system. Do not assume that corners, edging or installation methods from Chippy’s Original Flat Edge or Safe Edge ranges are interchangeable. The Safe Edge joining plates are reused only as the rear connection plates described on this page.
