What is ModWood FlameSheild?

Flame Shield® is a specially formulated ModWood composite decking board with a fire retardant additive included. Until now decking board options for bushfire prone areas was limited; however this has all changed. Flame Shield® can be used in BAL-12.5, BAL-19, BAL-29 and BAL-40 areas and gives you a traditional timber decking look and feel.

Flame Shield® has the highest BAL rating compared to other timber based decking in the Australian market place. Flame Shield® can be installed with either an enclosed*or unenclosed sub-structure and is offered in 3 colours of the ModWood Natural Grain Collection, wide board 137 x 23mm (SIlver Gum, Black Bean, Jarrah). Additionally; Flame Shield® also has a deep embossed pattern on the board surface to improve slip resistance.

ModWood FLAMESHEILD is versatile, easy to install, and looks great in any setting. Whether you are using it for pool decking, patio decking, or for a large entertaining platform, it will add definite sophistication which is long-wearing, safe and eco-friendly. And because it is splinter-free, it is also safe for use with children.

Flame Shield® is a fire-rated composite decking board built for projects in bushfire-prone areas where compliance isn’t optional. It’s engineered with a fire-retardant additive built into the board and designed to meet BAL-12.5, BAL-19, BAL-29, and BAL-40 requirements.

It’s one of the few timber-based decking options on the market that reaches this level of fire performance, giving you a compliant solution without limiting your design options. Flame Shield can be installed over both enclosed and unenclosed substructures, making it flexible across different builds.

Beyond compliance, it’s a practical long-term choice. The boards are splinter-free, low maintenance, and built to handle harsh Australian conditions without the ongoing sanding, oiling, or upkeep that comes with timber. Flame Shield delivers a consistent, durable decking surface suited to everything from residential builds to large outdoor entertaining areas.

It avoids many of the common issues associated with timber, such as splitting and surface deterioration over time.
