ModWood Natural Grain Collection brings the warmth and variation of timber into a deck without the regular sanding, sealing and painting associated with natural timber. Australian-made 88mm and 137mm boards are available in Black Bean, Jarrah, Silver Gum and Sahara, in Grooved and Solid Profiles.

ModWood Natural Grain Collection combines the colour variation and embossed grain of timber with lower ongoing maintenance. The changing tones and woodgrain help the boards avoid the flat, uniform appearance sometimes associated with composite decking.

Each board has two usable faces. One face has a smoother, darker appearance and the reverse has a lighter brushed finish. Both sides carry an embossed grain, allowing the surface to be selected to suit the look and exposure of the deck. The brushed face must be installed facing upward in sheltered applications in accordance with ModWood's requirements.

The boards do not require regular sanding, staining, sealing or painting for long-term protection. They still need routine cleaning, and the colour will lighten during the initial weathering period after installation.

Natural Grain is manufactured in Australia using approximately 90% recycled and reclaimed material. Each lineal metre of the 137 × 23mm board contains the equivalent of approximately 37 recycled plastic milk bottles and almost two kilograms of reclaimed plantation-pine waste.

Black pigment is dispersed through Black Bean, Jarrah and Silver Gum to create deliberate variation. Colour, pattern and grain depth will vary between boards and will change as the decking weathers outdoors.

Profiles

  • 88mm grooved edge: a narrower board that can create finer deck lines and design accents.
  • 137mm grooved edge: the standard wider decking board, designed for concealed fixing with the KlevaKlip system across the main deck area.
  • 137mm Square edge: suited to exposed sides, borders, steps and other places where a side groove would remain visible.

R10/R11 is a slip-resistance classification, not a promise that the surface cannot become slippery. Leaves, dirt, oils, mould and standing water should be removed as part of normal care.

Install ModWood over a properly designed, level and ventilated subframe in accordance with the current ModWood fixing instructions and applicable building requirements.

KlevaKlip is the preferred concealed fixing system for grooved Natural Grain boards. Square-edge boards and details that cannot use the concealed system require approved face fixings. Face fixings must be pre-drilled, and screws should be driven with controlled torque rather than overtightened.

Plan board direction, butt joins, borders, stairs and exposed edges before installation begins. Provide the specified side and end gaps so water can drain and the boards can move with changes in temperature and moisture.

The deck perimeter must remain open enough for cross flow ventilation. ModWood decking is not structural and must not be used as joists, bearers or other load-bearing framing.

1. What is Natural Grain best suited for?

It’s ideal for standard residential decking projects where you want a dependable, low-maintenance board without stepping up to a premium capped range.

2. How is it different from Xtreme Guard?

Natural Grain is an uncapped composite board, making it more cost-effective, while XTG has a protective cap for higher durability and stain resistance.

3. Does ModWood Natural Grain need sanding, staining or oiling?

No regular sanding, staining or oiling is required. Sweep the deck regularly, keep the gaps free from leaves and debris, and clean general dirt with water and a suitable composite-decking cleaner. Remove food, oil and other spills promptly.

4. Will the colour change after installation?

Yes. Natural Grain will lighten as the wood fibres weather, particularly during the first few months. The smoother, darker face can show scuffs and scratches more readily than the brushed face; many marks become less noticeable as the surface weathers.

5. Does ModWood become hot in the sun?

All decking can become hot in direct sun. Darker ModWood colours can feel similar to dark painted timber, so compare physical samples when surface temperature is important.

6. What warranty applies?

Natural Grain carries a 10-year limited residential warranty, subject to ModWood's current terms, correct installation and appropriate care.

7. Is it a good option for budget-conscious builds?

Yes. It’s one of the more cost-effective composite options while still delivering solid performance.
