Safe Edge Corten Steel Joining Plate

Create a clean, aligned connection between two Chippy’s Safe Edge lengths, or between Safe Edge edging and a purpose-made corner. The joining plate sits behind the connection and inside the folded top, helping position the components while keeping the visible face clear of exposed joining hardware.

  • Designed specifically for Chippy’s Safe Edge system

  • Connects straight lengths, internal corners and external corners

  • Sits behind the connection and locates inside the safety fold

  • Supplied un-drilled for accurate on-site positioning

  • Manufactured from 1.6 mm Corten steel

  • 150 mm wide

  • Available in 100, 150 and 280 mm heights

  • Designed by Chippy’s Outdoor and manufactured in Melbourne

The Safe Edge joining plate is the hidden connection behind Chippy’s Safe Edge garden edging. It is used wherever two straight lengths meet and on both sides of a Safe Edge internal or external corner.

The top of the joining plate sits inside the Safe Edge fold. This helps locate the plate, align the adjoining folded tops and hold the connection in the correct position while it is clamped and fixed.

Placing the joining system behind the edging keeps the smooth finished face clean and allows most fixings to remain in the lower third, where they can generally be concealed after installation.

This joining plate is designed specifically for Chippy’s Safe Edge system and is not required for Flat Edge Corten garden edging.

100 mm joining plate

  • 100 mm high × 150 mm wide
  • 1.6 mm Corten steel
  • Matches 100 mm Safe Edge garden edging and corners

150 mm joining plate

  • 150 mm high × 150 mm wide
  • 1.6 mm Corten steel
  • Matches 150 mm Safe Edge garden edging and corners

280 mm joining plate

  • 280 mm high × 150 mm wide
  • 1.6 mm Corten steel
  • Matches 280 mm Safe Edge garden edging and corners

Choose the same joining-plate height as the Safe Edge lengths and corner components used in the run.

The plates are intentionally supplied without pre-drilled holes. The Safe Edge lengths and corners have pre-drilled joining holes, allowing their positions to guide the fixings through the plate during installation. Leaving the plate un-drilled provides the adjustment needed to align the folded tops and accommodate small on-site tolerances.

Allow:

  • One joining plate wherever two straight Safe Edge lengths meet
  • Two joining plates for each Safe Edge internal or external corner—one for each side
  • A suitable roofing-screw or pop-rivet fixing packet, purchased separately

The joining plate sits behind both adjoining components, with its top located inside the safety fold. Once the folded tops and smooth finished faces are aligned, the connection is clamped and fixed through the pre-drilled holes in the edging or corner.

Roofing-screw and pop-rivet fixing packets are not included with the joining plate, edging or corners and must be purchased separately.

Never position a supporting peg directly on a join. A peg at the connection would require drilling through the edging and joining plate as well as the peg, making installation unnecessarily difficult.

  1. Confirm that the two Safe Edge components and joining plate are the same height.
  2. Measure and mark the centre of the 150 mm-wide joining plate. This leaves 75 mm of plate for each side of the connection.
  3. Position the plate behind the first Safe Edge length or corner, aligning the centre mark with the end of that component.
  4. Seat the top of the joining plate inside the safety fold. This helps locate the plate and hold it at the correct height.
  5. Clamp the plate firmly to the first component. Use a small G-clamp from underneath, or a larger G-clamp fitted over the folded top.
  6. Use the pre-drilled holes in the Safe Edge length or corner to set the fixing positions through the un-drilled joining plate.
  7. Fix the joining plate to the first component using a normal drill at slow speed with suitable roofing screws, or pre-drill the plate for suitable pop rivets. Do not use an impact driver.
  8. Bring the second Safe Edge component onto the exposed half of the joining plate, seating the plate inside its safety fold.
  9. Align the folded tops and smooth finished faces, then clamp the second component in position.
  10. Fix the second component through its pre-drilled joining holes using the same method.
  11. Keep the fixings in the lower third so they can be concealed where practical.
  12. Check the folded top, finished face and overall line before tightening the connection and backfilling.
  13. Never install a supporting peg directly on the join. Position the adjoining pegs away from the joining plate.

The joining plate is manufactured in Melbourne from 1.6 mm Corten steel and supplied in its raw grey condition. It will naturally develop an orange-brown patina through repeated exposure to moisture and drying.

Because the joining plate sits behind the edging and is generally concealed or buried, its weathering stage will usually be less visible than the face of the edging. No paint is required for the steel to develop its natural finish.

Rust-coloured runoff can stain concrete, paving, stone and other porous surfaces. Consider the surrounding surfaces and drainage before installation.

The joining plate connects and aligns Safe Edge components. It does not convert the edging into a structural retaining wall.
