Planning a batten screen or feature wall? Send Chippy’s your dimensions, plan or material take-off and our team can help estimate the battens, fixings and plugs required. Your builder or installer should check the final quantities, support structure, spacing and compliance requirements before ordering.

Available profiles

50 × 25 mm profile

  • Length: 5,400 mm
  • Approximate weight: 4.59 kg per length
  • Appearance: A 50 mm face with a 25 mm projection, creating a wider batten line.

40 × 30 mm profile

  • Length: 5,400 mm
  • Approximate weight: 4.43 kg per length
  • Appearance: A 40 mm face with a 30 mm projection, creating a narrower face and deeper shadow line.

Colours

  • Antique Silver
  • Blackbutt
  • Oak
  • Shou Sugi Ban

Colours on a phone or computer screen can vary. Samples are available from Chippy’s Outdoor in Clayton, and we recommend viewing one before placing a large order.

Order the complete project quantity together where practical. Minor colour and grain variation can occur, and samples or photographs may not represent every production length exactly.

Where WoodEvo battens can be used

WoodEvo Composite Battens can be used for:

  • decorative privacy and screening features
    exterior feature walls
  • facade details
  • pergola details and outdoor features
  • vertical or horizontal batten layouts
  • residential and commercial projects with a suitable supporting frame

Planning the spacing

There is no one correct gap between the battens. A smaller gap gives you more screening, while a wider gap lets through more light and air.
Before ordering, consider:

  • the required balance between privacy, airflow and light
  • whether the project will be viewed from one side or both
  • the batten orientation and overall height or length
  • the colour and visibility of the frame or wall behind the battens
  • access for cleaning and future inspection
  • wind exposure and project-specific structural requirements
  • doors, gates, corners, edges and changes in direction
  • the location of lights, services, downpipes and other penetrations
  • how 5.4 metre lengths will be transported, handled and cut on site

Calculating quantities

The required quantity depends on the finished width or height, chosen profile, visible gap, cut layout and waste allowance. Chippy’s can provide an estimate from supplied dimensions or plans, but the installer must verify the final layout and quantities before ordering.

Do not calculate a screen by dividing the total width by the batten width alone. The selected gap and the treatment of both outside edges must also be included.

Heat, reflective glass and fire considerations

The WoodEvo installation guide warns that strong heat sources and reflected sunlight from energy-efficient glazing can damage the battens. Consider barbecues, heaters, fire features, reflective windows and other concentrated heat sources when selecting the location.

Installation and fixing options

WoodEvo shows two ways to install the battens: concealed fixing with colour-matched plugs, or visible surface fixing. Both methods require a suitable supporting frame, supports at the correct centres, pre-drilling and the specified WoodEvo fixings.

The steps below explain the general process. Read the current WoodEvo Batten Installation Guide before starting.

Before installation

  1. Confirm the profile, colour, orientation, visible gap and finished layout.
  2. Check that the supporting frame is straight, structurally suitable and built for the project conditions.
  3. Keep support centres below the 600 mm maximum stated in WoodEvo’s guide. Closer support may be required by the project design.
  4. Store the battens flat, clean and protected from impacts, heat and construction contamination.
  5. Lay out the battens and inspect the colour, grain and condition before cutting or fixing.
  6. Use suitable gloves, safety glasses, long sleeves and respiratory protection when cutting or drilling.

Concealed fixing with colour-matched plugs

  1. Mark each fixing point so it aligns with the supporting rail or frame.
  2. Pre-drill the batten with a 5 mm drill bit.
Use one specified screw at each rail or support point.
  3. Drive the fixing head approximately 8–10 mm below the batten surface, following WoodEvo’s guide.
  4. Insert the matching plug and gently tap it level with the batten surface using an appropriate small hammer or mallet.
  5. Check the batten alignment and spacing before continuing across the installation.

Surface-screw installation

  1. Mark and pre-drill the batten with a 5 mm drill bit at each support.
  2. Use the specified colour-matched 12g × 65 mm 316 stainless steel timber screw where the WoodEvo surface-fixing method and timber support frame apply.
  3. Use one fixing per rail or support point and finish the screw flush with the surface as shown in WoodEvo’s guide.
  4. Do not overdrive the fixing or crush the profile.

Fixing to timber or metal

  • For timber support frames, WoodEvo specifies a 12g × 65 mm 316 stainless steel screw with T20 drive.
  • For metal support frames, WoodEvo specifies a 12g × 45 mm 410 stainless steel screw with T20 drive.
  • Use only the fixing method and plug combination applicable to the chosen support structure and finish.

Use the matching WoodEvo screws and plugs supplied for the Batten system. WoodEvo’s installation guide shows that both its non-coloured timber and metal concealed-fixing screws are used with colour-matched plugs. The surface-fixing method uses WoodEvo’s colour-matched timber screw and applies to timber sub-frames only.

Cutting and site protection

WoodEvo states that standard woodworking tools can be used. Select an appropriate sharp blade, support the 5.4 metre profile during cutting and follow the tool manufacturer’s safety instructions.

Do not cut or drill metal close to installed battens. Hot metal filings can embed in and damage the capped surface. Complete nearby grinding, welding and metal drilling before installing the finished battens wherever practical.

Planning a batten screen or feature wall? Send us your dimensions, plan or material take-off and our team can help estimate the battens, fixings and plugs required.

Please note, assistance will only be estimations and all measurments and quantities should be checked by the relevant installer prior to purchase.

WoodEvo battens need to be painted or oiled?

No regular painting, oiling or sanding is not required. The battens still need occasional cleaning and should be installed and cared for in accordance with WoodEvo’s current instructions.

How should the battens be cleaned?

Use gentle soap and water for routine cleaning. WoodEvo recommends diluted white vinegar in water for more stubborn marks. Avoid abrasive cleaners and solvent-based chemicals that can damage the surface.

Can I use a pressure washer?

WoodEvo permits a pressure washer up to 1,400 psi. Use a wide spray setting and maintain a safe distance from the surface. A concentrated jet or nozzle held too close can damage the finish.

Can WoodEvo battens be installed vertically or horizontally?

They can be installed vertically or horizontally, provided the frame and fixing points are set up for the chosen direction and the WoodEvo installation guide is followed.

Are the battens structural?

No. Treat them as decorative profiles fixed to a suitable supporting structure. They are not substitutes for structural framing, posts, beams, balustrades or pool barriers.

Can the battens provide privacy?

Yes, but the amount of privacy depends on the profile, the gap between battens and the viewing angle. Set out a small sample section if privacy is important to the project.

What is the maximum spacing between supports?

WoodEvo states that horizontal supports must not exceed 600 mm centres. Some projects may need closer supports because of their height, orientation, wind exposure or building requirements.

Can the battens be fixed to timber and metal frames?

They can be fixed to either material as long as you use the fixings specified for the selected support material. WoodEvo lists a 12g × 65 mm 316 stainless steel fixing for timber and a 12g × 45 mm 410 stainless steel fixing for metal.

Are the battens affected by heat?

They can be damaged by strong or concentrated heat. Keep them away from barbecues, heaters and other heat-producing objects, and assess the risk of concentrated sunlight reflected from energy-efficient glazing.

Can rubber or vinyl be left against the surface?

WoodEvo advises against leaving rubber or vinyl products, including some plastic drop sheets, against the battens because a surface reaction can produce a white stain under certain conditions.

What warranty applies?

WoodEvo publishes the Batten as part of its HomeAdvanced range, with a 30-year residential product warranty and a 15-year commercial product warranty from the original purchase date. Coverage is subject to WoodEvo’s complete warranty conditions, including correct installation and use, proof of purchase and the exclusions stated in the warranty.

Can I see a sample before ordering?

Yes. Samples are available from Chippy’s Outdoor in Clayton, although the full Batten display has not yet been built. We recommend viewing a sample because colours can look different on a phone or computer screen.
