Hook-Over Peg for Garden Edging

Install 100 or 150 mm
Corten Steel Garden Edging – Flat Edge or Safe Edge Corten Steel Garden Edging without drilling or separate fixings. The red-painted steel peg is driven into the ground and hooks over the top of the edging to hold it in position.

  • Hook-over design requires no screws, rivets or drilling

  • Compatible with 100 and 150 mm Flat Edge or Safe Edge

  • Two sizes: 20 × 280 mm and 40 × 280 mm

  • Red-painted steel finish

  • Small V-shaped point assists ground installation

  • 20 mm is the most commonly used option

  • 40 mm creates a wider, more visible fixing feature

  • Not suitable for 300 mm Flat Edge or 280 mm Safe Edge

For Safe Edge, Chippy’s recommends the Corten steel garden edging peg. It installs behind the edging, allows a concealed fixing and is easier to position beneath the safety fold.

The red-painted hook-over peg provides a straightforward way to support garden edging without drilling through the steel. Its hooked top fits over the edging, while the lower V-shaped point is driven into the ground with a hammer.

The 20 mm peg is the most common choice for 100 and 150 mm edging. The 40 mm option provides a wider fixing that can be used as a more noticeable feature. Because the hook wraps over the top, both sizes remain visible from the front and back of the edging.

These pegs can be used with Chippy’s Flat Edge or Safe Edge systems in 100 and 150 mm heights.

20 × 280 mm hook-over peg

  • 20 mm wide
  • 280 mm long
  • Red-painted steel
  • weight: 200 g
  • Suitable for 100 and 150 mm Flat Edge or Safe Edge
  • Most commonly selected size

40 × 280 mm hook-over peg

  • 40 mm wide
  • 280 mm long
  • Red-painted steel
  • weight: 400 g
  • Suitable for 100 and 150 mm Flat Edge or Safe Edge
  • Wider and more visually noticeable from both sides

Neither 280 mm peg is long enough for 300 mm Flat Edge or 280 mm Safe Edge. Use the 500 mm Corten steel garden edging peg for those heights.

The peg holds the edging without screws or rivets. It is installed partway into the ground first, allowing the edging to slide underneath the hook with the visible edging face positioned towards the front of the peg. The peg is then driven down to the required finished level.

As a starting guide, allow four to five pegs for each 3 metre edging length. The final number may vary with the ground conditions, curves and the amount of support required.

  • Curves gain rigidity from their shape, while the pegs help control their position.
  • Long straight runs should be checked carefully for line and level.
  • Loose or disturbed ground may require closer peg spacing.
  • The 40 mm hook-over peg will create a more visible fixing feature than the 20 mm option.

A hook-over peg does not need to be kept away from an edging join. Complete and secure the edging connection first; the peg can then be positioned over the join if you want the hook to help conceal the fixing.

  1. Set out the intended edging line and finished height.
  2. Select the 20 or 40 mm-wide peg. Use only with 100 or 150 mm edging.
  3. Position the peg at the required point along the edging line.
  4. Drive the V-shaped point partway into the ground with a hammer.
  5. Slide the top edge of the edging underneath and into the hook. The edging should sit inside the hook, toward the front of the peg.
  6. Hammer the peg down until the edging reaches the required height and the hook holds its top edge.
  7. If a closer fit is needed, the hook can be squeezed slightly against the edging.
  8. Continue along the run, checking the line, level and shape as each peg is installed.
  9. Backfill and compact behind the edging. The surrounding material will help push the edging firmly against the peg.

The lower end has a small V-shaped point. It is not as sharp as the pointed Corten peg, but it should still be handled carefully. Wear suitable gloves, keep hands clear while hammering and direct the ground end away from people during handling and storage.

Avoid striking the painted hook unnecessarily. Hammering and ground installation may mark the painted finish.

The peg is made from red-painted steel and provides a practical, no-drill fixing for 100 and 150 mm garden edging.

The hook-over design remains visible from both sides of the edging. Customers wanting a more concealed installation should choose the Corten steel garden edging peg, which sits behind the edging.

Outdoor installation, hammering and contact with soil may mark the painted finish. This peg is a practical landscape fixing rather than a hidden colour-matched Corten option.

These 280 mm pegs are intended for 100 and 150 mm edging only. They do not provide adequate length for 300 mm Flat Edge or 280 mm Safe Edge.

The peg supports garden edging but does not make it suitable for structural retaining loads.
