Corten Steel Rust Garden Ring

Create a defined circular garden bed, tree surround, stepper or raised landscape feature with Chippy’s Melbourne-made Corten garden rings. Each ring is formed from a 3 metre length of 1.6 mm Flat Edge Corten steel, creating an approximate 950 mm diameter once the ends overlap.

  • Approximately 950 mm diameter

  • Manufactured from 1.6 mm Corten steel

  • Choose 100, 150, 300 or 600 mm height

  • Assembled options for new planting

  • Unassembled options can be fitted around established trees

  • Large-flange pop rivet supplied with unassembled rings

  • No additional pegs or supports required for normal ring applications

  • Natural weathered finish develops over time

Chippy’s Corten garden rings provide a simple way to introduce a clean circular form into a garden. They can define planting, frame a tree, contain gravel or pebbles, create individual steppers or build visible height into a layered landscape.

Each ring is manufactured in Melbourne from the same flexible 1.6 mm weathering steel used for Chippy’s Flat Edge garden edging. A 3 metre length is formed into a circle and the ends overlap to create the join.

The circular form provides its own rigidity. For the intended garden-ring applications, additional pegs or external supports are not required.

All variants are made from 1.6 mm Corten steel and finish at approximately 950 mm in diameter.

100 mm high - suits Tree surrounds, low circular borders and garden steppers filled with gravel, pebbles or similar landscape material

150 mm high - A more visible circular border, planting ring or modest raised garden feature.

300 mm high - A pronounced raised bed or circular feature that introduces greater height into the garden.

600 mm high - A tall statement ring for creating substantial height and a stronger focal point within the landscape

All four heights can be used to create different levels within a garden.

Choose according to how much height and visual presence the ring should add, as well as what will be planted or placed inside it.

Both assembled and unassembled variants are available in 100, 150, 300 and 600 mm heights.

Choose assembled for new planting or when the ring can be placed in position before the plant is installed. Chippy’s forms and joins the ring before supply, so it arrives ready to position. Where time and weather allow, Chippy’s also tries to begin the natural rusting process on assembled rings before collection or delivery. The colour and stage of weathering will vary and are not guaranteed.

Choose unassembled when the ring needs to be fitted around an established tree or existing planting. The open ring can be positioned around the tree without trying to lift a completed steel circle over the canopy. Once in place, bring the ends together at the overlap and secure the connection with the supplied large-flange pop rivet.

Neither option needs separate pegs or additional external support for its intended garden-ring use.

Installing an assembled ring

  1. Mark the intended position and check the surrounding levels and drainage.
  2. Prepare a reasonably level base around the circumference.
  3. Set the completed ring into position and check that it sits at the intended height.
  4. Add planting, soil, mulch, gravel, pebbles or other suitable landscape material evenly around the ring.

Assembled rings are particularly useful for new plants because the ring can be positioned first and the planting completed inside it.

Installing an unassembled ring around an established tree

  1. Bring the open ring into position around the existing tree or planting.
  2. Form the steel gradually into its circular shape.
  3. Bring the ends together to create the intended overlap.
  4. Secure the connection with the supplied large-flange pop rivet.
  5. Check the circle and finished level before adding the selected landscape material.

The ring’s circular form provides rigidity, so separate pegs or additional supports are not required for normal installation.

Unassembled rings are supplied as raw grey weathering steel.

Chippy’s tries to begin the natural weathering process on assembled rings before supply where time and conditions allow, so an assembled ring may already show some rust colour. Customers should not expect or rely on a particular colour or stage of patina at collection or delivery.

Repeated wetting and drying develops the orange-brown patina. If a ring arrives raw or only partly weathered, the surface will continue changing outdoors.

Initial colour may appear within weeks, but a more developed finish can take a couple of months depending on weather, season and orientation. The surface will continue changing over time.

Rust-coloured runoff can stain concrete, paving, stone and other porous materials. Consider where water will drain before positioning the ring. If staining would be unacceptable and runoff cannot be directed away, Corten may not be suitable for that location.

The ring requires very little ongoing maintenance and does not need to be painted to create its natural finish.

All four heights and both assembly options can be viewed at the Chippy’s Outdoor showroom in Clayton, alongside the other garden edging systems and installation components.
