Corten steel garden edging made for Australian gardens


Chippy’s Outdoor has supplied Corten steel garden edging for more than 10 years.

Long before rusted garden edging became common across Melbourne, Flat Edge was the original Chippy’s system.


We designed it to do the job garden edging should do: create a clean division between lawn, garden beds, paths, gravel and mulch without making the installation unnecessarily complicated.


Each length is now manufactured in Melbourne from 1.6 mm weathering steel. The steel has enough body to hold a clean garden line while remaining flexible enough to create straight runs, angles and natural curves. At 3 metres long, it also reduces the number of joins required across most projects.


The edging arrives as raw grey steel. It does not come pre-rusted. Once exposed to repeated moisture and drying, the surface gradually changes into the orange-brown patina that gives Corten its distinctive, natural finish. No two installations will weather in exactly the same way.

Our corten steel garden edging comes in 3.0m lengths and is available in 3 sizes:

Every Flat Edge length has pre-drilled holes at both ends. They are there to join one length to another, providing a clean overlap and consistent fixing points. For trade and DIY customers, the marked out joining holes makes it easy to install.

Which Height Should I Choose?

100 mm Flat Edge is the starting point for subtle garden definition. It works particularly well where the objective is simply to separate one area from another—lawn from a garden bed, gravel from mulch, or a path from surrounding soil—without turning the edge itself into a pronounced feature.


150 mm Flat Edge gives the border more presence. It is a good option for raised garden beds, more visible landscape lines and areas where a modest difference in garden level needs to be accommodated.


300 mm Flat Edge creates a more definitive landscape feature. It can be useful for deeper garden beds and sloping sites where more of the edging needs to remain visible.


The important limit is structural loading. Garden edging can manage garden definition and modest changes in level, but it is not a structural retaining wall. Where a project needs to retain substantial soil, manage pressure from a slope or support a structural load, use a properly designed retaining structure. Traditional sleepers can provide that structure and, where appearance matters, can be clad with one of Chippy’s screening products.

Is 1.6mm Corten Edging thick enough?

Whilst a variety of thicknesses are available, the largest number is not necessarily the best product.

In practice, the right thickness depends on what the edging needs to do.


For everyday residential garden borders, 1.6 mm weathering steel provides a practical balance. It can hold a clean line, but it can also be carried, positioned and formed into curves without specialist equipment. That flexibility is part of the design.
Curves naturally add rigidity to an installed length. On curved work, pegs are used not only to secure the steel but also to form and control the shape while the surrounding ground is finished.

Thicker steel can be useful where a project calls for greater rigidity, long uncompromising straight lines, commercial use or higher loads. It is not automatically the best choice for a residential garden, particularly where flexibility, manageable handling and DIY installation matter.

The edging system should suit the application.

Chippy’s Outdoor designed both Flat Edge and Safe Edge, but they were created for different customers and different finished results.


Choose Flat Edge when you want the original, straightforward Corten border. It is economical, flexible and well suited to everyday garden separation, straight runs, angles and curves.

The pre-drilled holes join each length, while separate pegs secure and help shape the line.


Consider Safe Edge when the top of the edging will be more visible or when a softer, more pronounced finished edge is preferred.


Chippy’s developed Safe Edge around a continuous folded top. Its joining plates and pegs are fitted from behind, and its purpose-made corners continue around the change of direction without cutting through that top fold. Fixings sit in the lower third of the profile, where they are generally buried below the finished soil level or hidden within normal grass growth.


The choice is not simply “standard” versus “better”. Flat Edge provides a simpler and more economical garden border. Safe Edge provides a more detailed finishing system where the visible top edge is an important part of the result.


Neither system is a substitute for a structural retaining wall.

How to install Flat Edge Corten garden edging.

1. Set out the line. Mark the proposed edge with a string line for straight runs or a hose for curves.
2. Prepare the ground. Create a narrow trench or loosen the soil along the marked line so the edging can be set to the required height.
3. Position the edging. Place the 3 metre lengths into position and form any curves gradually.
4. Join adjoining lengths. Overlap the ends together, align the top edges and use the pre-drilled holes to connect the two lengths with the appropriate fixings.
5. Peg the edging. As a general guide, allow approximately four to five pegs per 3 metre Flat Edge length. Ground conditions, height above ground and the shape of the line may require more or fewer.
6. Check the finished line. Adjust the height and alignment before tightening fixings and backfilling.
7. Backfill and compact. Firm the surrounding soil or landscape material so the edging is supported and the lower fixings are concealed where practical.

Important joining advice

Do not place a peg directly over a join. That position would require the screw or drill bit to pass through two edging lengths and the peg—three layers of steel.

It makes the job unnecessarily difficult and removes the main advantage of having pre-drilled joining holes.
Join the two edging lengths through their pre-drilled end holes, then position the nearest peg to one side of the join where it can support the line without passing through all three layers.


Drilling and fixing tips from the Chippy’s team

Use a normal drill rather than an impact driver.

When pre-drilling or using roofing screws, run the drill very slowly. A slow speed generally helps cut the steel more effectively and gives better control.

Place masking tape or duct tape over the point where the screw or drill bit will start. The tape helps prevent the bit or self-tapping screw from skating across the steel.

Confirm the alignment before installing the final fixings.

Cutting a length

Use an angle grinder with a suitable cutting disc to shorten the edging.

After cutting, lightly run a grinding disc over the cut edge at approximately 45 degrees to create a small bevel and remove the sharp corner.

Wear suitable eye, hearing and hand protection and follow the tool manufacturer’s safety instructions.

How the Corten finish develops

Every length is supplied as raw grey weathering steel, not with a finished rust colour. Customers should expect the product delivered to their home or collected from Clayton to look grey before it begins weathering.
The patina develops through repeated wetting and drying. Moisture begins the surface change; drying continues the weathering cycle. This is why a fixed “Week 1 to Week 4” promise is misleading.
Timing varies with the weather, the season and how the steel is positioned. An orange-brown colour may begin appearing within weeks, but a more developed finish can take a couple of months. The colour will continue to change as the steel weathers.
Vertical installations often take longer because water drains away quickly. If customers want to encourage the initial patina before installing the edging, Chippy’s practical method is to lay the lengths flat in a suitable outdoor area where they can be wetted and allowed to dry.
To encourage natural weathering before installation:
Lay the lengths flat in a suitable outdoor area.
Keep individual lengths exposed rather than tightly stacked together.
Wet them with a hose and give the surface a brush with a broom.
Allow the steel to dry between wetting cycles.
Repeat for several days as required.
This is intended to encourage the natural process, not manufacture a guaranteed colour or timeline. Patina development will always vary.

Will rust runoff stain nearby surfaces?

Yes. During weathering, Corten steel can release rust-coloured runoff. That runoff may stain concrete, paving, stone and other porous surfaces, particularly while the initial patina is forming.
Consider where water will drain before deciding on the installation location. A garden bed surrounded by soil, lawn or mulch is very different from edging positioned immediately above new concrete or pale porous paving.
If rust-coloured staining would be unacceptable and runoff cannot be directed away from the adjacent surface, Corten may not be the right product for that position. Saying this clearly builds more trust than pretending the limitation does not exist.
Corten remains a durable alternative to traditional timber garden edging, particularly where the natural weathered finish suits the landscape.

Does Corten garden edging require maintenance?

Once installed, Corten garden edging requires very little ongoing maintenance. It is designed to weather naturally, so it does not need to be painted or regularly treated.
The steel will continue to change in colour as the patina develops. Rust-coloured runoff can occur during this process and may stain concrete, paving, stone and other porous surfaces. This should be considered when choosing where to install the edging, but it is a location and drainage consideration—not a recurring maintenance task.
