Corten Steel Garden Edging Peg

Support, level and shape Chippy’s Corten Steel Garden Edging – Flat Edge or Safe Edge Corten Steel Garden Edging with a heavy-duty Corten peg designed for both systems. Choose the peg length to match the edging height, position the pegs first, then clamp and fix the edging once the line is established.

Safety warning: The ground end of the peg has a sharp point. Handle it carefully, wear suitable gloves and keep the pointed end directed away from people when carrying, storing and installing the pegs.

Chippy’s Corten steel garden edging pegs provide the support needed to set the edging height, maintain straight runs and form controlled curves. Their 3.0 mm thickness gives the installer a firm fixing point behind the edging while the Corten steel develops a compatible natural patina outdoors.

Installing and levelling these pegs first is generally the easiest method. The edging can then be brought to the established line, clamped to the pegs and fixed in position. This is particularly helpful with Safe Edge, where the folded top sits over the peg and helps retain it while the lower fixing is installed.

As a starting guide, allow four to five pegs per 3 metre edging length. The final number may vary with the edging height, ground conditions, curves and the amount of support required.

Both sizes are manufactured in Melbourne and supplied as raw grey Corten steel.

The pre-drilled pilot holes provide options when pre-drilling or using pop rivets. Roofing screws can also be installed at a different fixing position where required, allowing the fixing height to suit the selected edging system and the amount of edging above ground.

As a starting guide, allow four to five pegs for each 3 metre length of Corten steel garden edging. Some installations may require more or fewer:

  • Curves gain rigidity from their shape, while the pegs help form and control the curve.
  • Long straight runs should be checked carefully for line and level.
  • Loose, disturbed or softer ground may require closer peg spacing.
  • Taller or more exposed edging may require additional support.

For Safe Edge, it is generally easier to drive and level the pegs first. The folded top of the edging can then be positioned over the peg tops. The fold helps hold each peg in place at the top, so a roofing screw can be installed through the lower section of the edging into the peg.

For Flat Edge, position the edging against the installed pegs and fix each peg near both the top and bottom. This secures the flat profile without relying on a folded top.

Roofing-screw and pop-rivet fixing packets are sold separately.

Never position a peg directly on an edging join. This would require drilling through the overlapping edging components as well as the peg, creating three layers of steel and making the connection unnecessarily difficult.

  1. Set out the intended edging line and determine the finished height.
  2. Select the 395 or 500 mm peg to match the edging height.
  3. Drive the pointed end into the ground with a hammer, taking care around the sharp point and keeping hands clear of the striking area.
  4. Install and level the remaining pegs before attaching the edging. Check both straight alignment and the shape of any curves.
  5. Bring the edging into position against the pegs.
  6. Clamp each peg firmly to the edging. For Safe Edge, use a small G-clamp from underneath or a larger G-clamp fitted over the folded top.
  7. For Safe Edge, seat the fold over the peg top and install one roofing screw through the lower section of the edging into the peg.
  8. For Flat Edge, install a fixing near both the top and bottom of the peg.
  9. If using pop rivets, use the peg’s pilot holes to assist with marking and pre-drilling the edging.
  10. If using roofing screws, either pre-drill from behind through a suitable pilot hole, or clamp the peg, mark the required fixing position and drive the roofing screw slowly through the edging into the peg.
  11. Where a roofing screw is started without a pilot hole, place masking tape or duct tape over the fixing point to help prevent the screw from skating across the steel.
  12. Use a normal drill at slow speed. Do not use an impact driver.
  13. Check the finished line and level before backfilling and compacting around the edging.

Do not install a peg directly on an edging join. Move the nearest supporting peg away from the connection.

The peg is manufactured in Melbourne from 3.0 mm Corten steel and supplied in its raw grey condition. Where exposed to repeated moisture and drying, it will gradually develop an orange-brown patina.

Most of the peg will normally sit behind the edging or below the finished ground level, so its weathering stage may not look identical to the visible edging face. No paint is required for the steel to develop its natural finish.

Rust-coloured runoff can stain concrete, paving, stone and other porous surfaces. Consider the surrounding surfaces and drainage before installation.

The peg has a sharp pointed end. Wear suitable gloves, handle and store it carefully, and keep it away from children before installation.

The peg supports garden edging but does not make it suitable for structural retaining loads.
